Another lovely weekend at home. Friday, drove through lots of rain after work, got to Terry's around 3:30, had a very nice evening with him. Saturday morning, went to my parents' place, met the family for lunch, got some awesome jumping beans from Heathy for my "we went to Vegas and you didn't" present. Although the damn things kept popping away in their little package in the middle of the night and kept me up. Apparently keeping them in the dark does not necessarily make them calm down. Today I'm going over to Heathy's and we're going shopping at Fluevog, and I'm going to get some cool shoes. They've got a sale on size five shoes because apparently only freaks like me have super small feet, and they need to get rid of them. Of course, I did find a pair on the website that I don't think I could live without. They're $179, but can you really put a price on cool shoes?

Jumping beans actually jump? What are they / how do they work?

Oh my goodness yes!
Just as pineapples are not apples and peanuts are not nuts, the jumping bean is not a bean, nor is it a seed. It is actually a small, thin-shelled section of a seed capsule containing the larva of a small gray moth called the jumping bean moth (Laspeyresia saltitans). After consuming the seed within the capsule section, the robust, yellowish-white larva has the peculiar habit of throwing itself forcibly from one wall to the other, thereby causing the jumping movements of the capsule. Mexican jumping bean capsules typically separate into three parts or sections, some of which contain a moth larva.

Those poor jumping beans!

Are you going to let them out of the beans?

The right answer to the shoe question is One can never put a price on being cool and strutting your stuff

The male answer is - Does it cover my feet?

Well, the beans will sprout into moths in the spring, and yes, I will let them go! I did feel awfully bad for them when Heathy explained in more detail how the jumping works - I knew they were bugs, and I knew the beans jumped because they were moving around, but they move around because they're uncomfortable - they jump most when they're in a warm place, so really I'm torturing them. But they're funny to watch...

LOL

They are plugged in with wax so you will have to ermove it at some point :)

Then you will have Mexican moths

Plugged with wax? No they're not. I don't know what kind of jumping beans you have, but mine have no wax blocking them in. They're free to go whenever they're ready.

Yeah they usually rub a little wax or plug the beans so the larva cant get out so they jump like mad for a few weeks then pass away

No, in nature they jump like mad for months on end. They don't hatch until spring.
