Greetings from the tropics!
Jan. 6th, 2004 09:27 amHello! Here I sit in sunny, hot, humid Antigua. We've got about half an hour left in our first day on-air, and it's been a trying one. The pot system we have doesn't work - nothing wrong at our end, nothing wrong back at the station, but there's something in the line in between that's just not connecting. So we've been doing updates over the phone, which actually makes things easier for me. With the pots, we've got a 2-3 second delay, which makes doing news and such impossible without sounding stupid. Over the phone there's no delay - I just go on as usual, and the sound quality's not all that bad.
The difference between the resorts and the local neighbourhoods is astounding. The resorts and grounds are phenomenal. Driving along from the airport was downright depressing - people live in rundown shacks, some with just tin strips for a roof. Chickens and goats running around like mad, kids playing soccer in old abandoned yards...then on the hillsides you see these massive mansions and it just makes the regular houses seem that much worse.
As for the resort itself, it's GORGEOUS. Palm trees everywhere, nice white sand beaches as far as the eye can see, mountains in the background, bird chirping all over the place...it's like heaven but with higher humidity. It was funny, when we arrived yesterday one of the staff apologized for how cold it was because it was only about 26 C. Yeah, cold! Reading the forecast for Chatham-Kent this morning was fun - cloudy, flurries, blowing snow, high -10. Jolly Beach - sunny, a few clouds, high 28. Nice :D Although I must say, my dad's 'this is a Jolly place' jokes got old within minutes of getting off the plane ;)

Video camera tip of the day: If you're reviewing video you have just shot with the vcr function, press the little "end search" button afterwards (on the inside, where the screen flips out) and it will find the end of the footage so there will be no breaks.

Date: 2004-01-07 01:26 am (UTC)Dad's planning on going sailing every morning now. He tipped over twice yesterday and was pretty embarassed. We spend the afternoons together, and spend a bit of time with our winners. Shannon spends all her time with them, but I'd rather do my own thing - this is my vacation too. But they're having an absolute blast, and are very nice people. The kids are good too, surprisingly (aged 7 and 9)
We're hoping to go on a safari tour some time this week - they have a big open-backed jeep that tours you around the island, showing you all the hidden gems.

And now that my techno-mumbling has made you shake your head and roll your eyes at me, I'm off! Another job well done. ;)
