LOS ANGELES -- The artist and writer behind Disney characters such as Dumbo and the screenplay for ``101 Dalmatians'' has died.
Illustrator and writer Bill Peet died Saturday at his home in the San Fernando Valley.
He was 87.
Peet recently had pneumonia and had battled cancer and heart problems over the past several years.
Among the Disney classics featuring Peet's talents are ``Fantasia,'' ``Cinderella,'' ``Alice in Wonderland'' and ``Sleeping Beauty.''
Peet wrote the screenplay for ``101 Dalmatians'' in 1961, and later wrote and drew characters for ``The Sword in the Stone.''
Peet left the studio in 1964 because of a thorny relationship with Disney.
In his autobiography published in 1989, Peet said he drew the evil Captain Hook in ``Peter Pan'' to resemble Disney.
Peet had also published several children's books and received more a dozen book awards for children's literature.
He earned an Annie Award for contributions to animation.
on a personal note - Peet was the author of one of my absolute favourite childhood books "The Spooky Tail of Prewitt Peacock"
