Anyone ever been on a cruise?

Mike and I will be joining our friends Jay and Brandy on a Caribbean cruise in February for their wedding. We have a choice between a stateroom with a window and one without. The one without is about two hundred bucks cheaper, but I'm a little concerned about motion sickness. So first off, I'd like to know how rocky a cruise ship is, and does a room without a window make it any worse?

I'm a very good sailor, though have never been on an actual cruise (longest boat ride perhaps a 10 hour ferry ride in the Agean), so you might want to take this advice with a pinch of salt...

I think whether you get a window would depend most on how much time you intend to spend in the room. If you're going to be out and about socialising with people and mostly in the room to shower and sleep, I'd say save your $200. Keep in mind that windows on cruise ships tend to be pretty tiny unless you're in the super-expensive suites.

Hey, aren't you supposed to be in Greece? Or maybe you meant Grease. Even so, you should be at rehearsal.

Sorry not to have emailed you back yet...will do it next week. Have a good weekend! xxxx

Excellent advice, despite the smaller boat. Thank you very much :)

On our Alaskan cruise, we were glad we didn't take the window. I mean the room is the size of a closet, and you'll want to spend as much time as possible away from it. When you're in it, it will be night time and there'll be nothing to see anyway.

We were seldom on the open ocean so I can't comment on the rocking of the boat, but there was always a subtle motion happening, and when we were on dry land I remember an odd gliding feeling like when you just get off a treadmill. One night I woke up and the whole room was swaying back and forth, but it was more soothing than sickening and I fell right back to sleep.

I've been on a cruise (a Caribbean cruise, even), and I get motion sickness easily. First, you spend almost zero time in your cabin, and what you do spend there is sleeping, so it really doesn't matter one way or the other. Second, they have motion sickness medicine that they give out for free at the information desk, and it's pretty effective.

I didn't get sick at all on the ship. It takes a bit to get used to walking around if it's really stormy, but the ship is so huge that that's not a big deal. I *did* get motion sick when I went out on tours on smaller boats -- sailboats and stuff. But when we went to Hawaii, I learned that dramamine does the trick for that (although it knocks you on your ass the next day). I've heard the Bonine is just as effective but makes you less drowsy.

The rooms are REALLY small, so having a window can be nice if that bothers you, but really, if you're feeling penned in, you just go out into the ship. There's tons to do and it's nice to walk around and such. We literally would walk into our room, fall asleep, get up, shower, change, and leave, EVERY day.
