Anyone ever been on a cruise?
Mike and I will be joining our friends Jay and Brandy on a Caribbean cruise in February for their wedding. We have a choice between a stateroom with a window and one without. The one without is about two hundred bucks cheaper, but I'm a little concerned about motion sickness. So first off, I'd like to know how rocky a cruise ship is, and does a room without a window make it any worse?

If you're going to be out and about socialising with people and mostly in the room to shower and sleep, I'd say save your $200. Keep in mind that windows on cruise ships tend to be pretty tiny unless you're in the super-expensive suites.

Date: 2004-06-04 09:19 am (UTC)We were seldom on the open ocean so I can't comment on the rocking of the boat, but there was always a subtle motion happening, and when we were on dry land I remember an odd gliding feeling like when you just get off a treadmill. One night I woke up and the whole room was swaying back and forth, but it was more soothing than sickening and I fell right back to sleep.

Date: 2004-06-04 09:25 am (UTC)I didn't get sick at all on the ship. It takes a bit to get used to walking around if it's really stormy, but the ship is so huge that that's not a big deal. I *did* get motion sick when I went out on tours on smaller boats -- sailboats and stuff. But when we went to Hawaii, I learned that dramamine does the trick for that (although it knocks you on your ass the next day). I've heard the Bonine is just as effective but makes you less drowsy.
The rooms are REALLY small, so having a window can be nice if that bothers you, but really, if you're feeling penned in, you just go out into the ship. There's tons to do and it's nice to walk around and such. We literally would walk into our room, fall asleep, get up, shower, change, and leave, EVERY day.
