Slummin it
Oct. 15th, 2002 06:12 amThanks to my charming and ever-considerate landlord, I'll be heading back to the laundromat from now on. There are laundry machines (coin washer/dryer) in my house, right next to my apartment actually, and I've always quite enjoyed that I can do a wash any time I want, wearing whatever I want. But over the weekend, my landlord did some sort of repairs to the dryer, and has now hiked the price of a dry up to $1.50. That's $1.50 for both the washer and dryer now, and that's just stupid. I'm not paying an extra dollar for every round of clothes I do. Then after informing me of the laundry change, he started talking about how the price of everything is going up - hydro, gas, everything, so he's got to start making up for his losses somehow. Now my lease expires on December first, and I started getting very worried that he's going to hike up my rent. But after a little research this morning, my mind has been put at ease. According to the Tenant Protection Act, he cannot hike my rent more than 2.9% this year (provincial guidelines), and if he's going to hike it at all, he has to let me know three months in advance in writing. Since it's less than two months until my lease runs out, I'd say he's missed the deadline. Sorry bucko, rent stays the same! :)
