Stupid git

Got an email from my former roommate this morning. He spent the weekend in hospital, found out he has pancreatitis. At first glance the word scared the living crap out of me - my grandmother died from pancreatic cancer. But further in the email he explained pancreatitis is what you get from being an alcoholic. Lovely. Just one more example of how his drinking is fucking him up. Ever since I met him, I've been trying to help him cut down on all that shit - drinking, really hard drugs, etc, and for a little while he did cut down. He even stopped completely for a few months. Then I moved to PEI and he started up again (no direct correlation, but I felt guilty nonetheless). Other friends of ours have told me to give up -he's a lost cause, and nothing I do or say will ever make him stop. But I kept on. I was so sure some day, some combination of things he'd done, things I'd said, and things he'd heard from other people would suddenly click and he'd get better, but it's not going to happen. He's killing himself, and there is absolutely nothing I can do to stop it.

only he can stop himself at this point... you can't help someone who refuses to help themselves.

One of my good friends was in the hospital for almost a month due to pancreatitis three years ago. It didn't develop exclusively from his drinking, although booze may have helped it along. He used to be a fairly amazing beer drinker. He hasn't had a single drink since he got out of the hospital three years ago. To him even one beer is a chance he's not willing to take. I hope your friend come to this realization too.
